I spent part of the afternoon doing my first install of zVM 5.4 on a z10 (first 5.4 and first z10). It has brought up two comments/questions:
1. It seems to me that in the past the product package as shipped from IBM included the latest RSU on whatever media the system was ordered on (in our case, DVD). But there was no RSU in any form in the shipment. I had ordered the RSU in download format and have that, but it is not usable in the nice, clean DVD install process. At the end of the INSTDVD, when it asks for the RSU DVD, you cannot use the downloaded files. Seems strange to have a nice way to apply the RSU, but not supply it as part of the shipped package. Is this normal/correct? 2. We loaded the system (skipping the RSU application step) and IPLed the new zVM system. Looked pretty good. (Customer was impressed with how quick/easy.) However, the next step is to run the "INSTVM DVD" step to "complete the installation tasks". We got an error essentially saying that "DVD" was an incorrect argument. I dug into the INSTVM EXEC some and found that it parses a file, $INST$ $FILE$ C to get the installation media. I checked the file and, sure enough, in the installation media position, it said "TAPE". But we installed from DVD! I guess I could invoke INSTVM with "TAPE" argument, but I'm not sure if this would work or be a good idea. Likewise, I could change the $INST$ $FILE$ to (correctly) indicate DVD as the media, but again, I'm fearful of any side effects. What am I missing (or what did I do wrong) and where should I go from here? Thanks Mike C. M.
