Martin, while your request is not specific as to you/your group's
responsibility with Linux (versus another group handling Linux), I strongly
recommend that you target a class that at least touches on the basics of Linux,
and the more specific to Z the better. You will inevitably be involved with
Linux, and understanding these concepts will be crucial to the success/failure
of the evaluation (especially if there is a Zseries vs. intel/VMWare hidden
agenda), IMHO.

There are some great Redbooks very specific to Suse or Red Hat installations
with VM recommendations, start to finish!

Also crucial to the evaluation are some basic VM Performance considerations,
and having attended Velocity Software's z/VM and Linux under z/VM Performance
Class, I do recommend this one.

Honestly, the installation of VM is simple right out of the box with install
docs, and just works! Many may point out "standards" that make it easier to
manage, and there is truth to that.

As to Security, Network, and Operations, this LIST's archives have a wealth of
knowledge, most likely better than any class you could find, and poster's
remain very responsive to questions. Also the SHARE presentation archives have
great info.

My $.02, and good luck!

Subject: User-Recommended z/VM Training

Can any VM systems programmers recommend a good training course for
seasoned mainframe sysprogs who are expanding into z/VM? The course I am =

looking for should teach how to properly install, maintain, debug, tune, =

expand, plan, etc. including network, security, operations, etc. for a =

serious systems programmer.

If you're a vendor/trainer, please do not respond with your sales pitch. =

I want recommendations from actual users only. And, if you can only
recommend NOT going to someone's particular course, speak up please.

I worked with VM many years ago, so am aware of some of the concepts, but=

don't recall many of the details. Now, we're wanting to evaluate zVM for =

our Linux systems. On two occasions so far people have been signed up for=

IBM education on VM, only to have the classes cancelled at the last minut=
e
due to an insufficient number of students. So, although IBM offers what =

sounds like a good class, they aren't delivering it. I could rant on abou=
t
that for a while, but what's the value?
