Jeez, am I glad I'm not the only one who ran into this problem. I've been editing tables.py to no avail, not realizing that anthyprefs.py required editing as well. Thanks to everyone who posted info!
Ibus-anthy is great--so much more elegant than the other IME I tried (Mozc). Thank you, developers.
