I personally use ibus-sunpinyin, which suffers from the issue resolved in
[https://github.com/ibus/ibus/commit/b8f36164], and can not be switched
to horizontal mode
The commit fixes to customize the orientation with ibus-setup.
I think you can choose either the horizontal or vertical mode with
ibus-setup and your problem is fixed?
