I thought about this mainsheet tackle a little more and I think maybe there's
at least one more problem with it....  I think there's a whole lot of friction
in the system....

When the boom is outboard, and you try to haul the mainsheet, the lower block
on the traveller twists and the line chafes against the cheeks.  (imagine
looking down on the block and tackles from above and you'll see what I mean).
The cleat should be on a separate block so that you can trim the sheet from any
angle.

One thought is to use a put a hexacat base (a single block with cleat and
swivelling becket, with or without a rachet) on the traveller, with a
swivelling triple above it.

see http://tinyurl.com/mjut9l for examples.

You could increase the purchase to 8:1 by using one double block on the
boom....  You'd have to figure out the best way to reeve the line to reduce
friction from having the lines rub against each other.

If the lines are chafing against each other, you may want to experiment with
using "right angle reeving" instead of "parallel lacing"

See http://www.harken.com/rigtips/Reeving_Diagrams.php for examples.

Hope this helps,

Fair leads,

Judy B

Tim,

I took a look at the pic of your setup, which is pretty typical for the
mid-boom C27 mainsheet.

I can't be sure looking at the picture, but it looks like the lines might be
chafing against the cheeks of the blocks and creating extra friction.  The lead
doens't look fair to me.  If that's the case, using twisted shackles or swivels
to attache the blocks to the bails will give you a more fair lead with less
chafe and friction.

Fair winds and fair leads,
Judy B

Tim,

I just uploaded a photo of my setup to the photos section, under 'Blown
