During the refit on Aquadesiac it was determined that the M-18 diesel engine needed a new starter. I checked the Thorresen Marine website and was absolutely blown away by the price of $1,164.57 for a starter. (See Link) http://shop.torresen.com/marine_diesel_direct/Universal/index.php?p=details&mfc=Universal&sku=299512 After I established that it wasn't built out of solid gold, I decided to do a little research. It turns out that the starter for a Universal M-18 Marine Diesel engine is exactly the same as a starter for a Kubota Tractor motor. The only difference between the two is the Kubota starter cost me $150 brand new and the Universal starter cost someone else $1,165. Needless to say I installed the Kubota starter and it's been working great ever since. I'm sure that someone else has already figured this out, but I just figured I'd pass it along.
