Scott,
If we are discussing the starter, it's a fairly easy job. A couple of years ago, one evening the M18 would not crank. I checked the starter switch on the panel and it was working fine. So I felt the problem was with the starter. The starter is conveniently located behind the alternator. I removed both and took them to an auto electric shop. They told me both were fine. I said no, it would not start and asked them to replace the solenoid on the starter. At the time, the low oil pressure/temperature sensor was not working so I replaced it at the same time. It is located behind the aft end of the starter. Since then, I have not had a problem. The Universal M-18 is a Kabota block or engine that Universal marinized. I don't know what they do to an engine to marinize it but it may have something to do with eliminating sparking in electrical components and maybe making some changes to the cooling system. If you get into this, make sure you disconnect the batteries first. I labeled all the wires to the alternator and starter to make sure I got them connected to the correct places. Anyone done this? Getting the m18 in + out isnt 'zactly easy.... _____ From: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, June 16, 2009 9:27 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [IC27A] FYI for your M18 Starter How about having it rebuilt? I did that with a powerboat I had. Dropped it off in the morning, and picked it up in the afternoon. It wouldn't hurt to be sure they know it is "marine". But they also sell a "marinized" aftermarket replacement for $228. If so, it's worth paying the premium, imo. [The entire original message is not included]
