The flash point for diesel fuel is 143ºF while the flash point for gasoline is
-40ºF

The flash point of a flammable liquid is the lowest temperature at which it can
form an ignitable mixture in air.

So while gasoline will form flammable vapors at normal atmospheric
temperatures, diesel fuel will not.

Therefore, in theory, diesel powered boats should not need ignition protected
parts, however there still may be federal regs requiring it so proceed with due
caution...
