Someone questioned the requirements for ignition protection on boats (on a
starter motor question). Federal regulations
(http://www.uscgboating.org/regulations/fedreg.htm) contain electrical
requirements for boats. The ignition chapter seems to apply only to
gasoline engine equipped boats, but a closer reading may uncover other
requirements.

How about having it rebuilt? I did that with a powerboat I had. Dropped it
off in the morning, and picked it up in the afternoon. It wouldn't hurt to
be sure they know it is "marine".

As Bill pointed out Torrenson sells original OEM Universal M18 starters for
an unbeliveable $1600! But they also sell a "marinized" aftermarket
replacement for $228.

Manufacturer: API MARINE
Part Number: 17051
Description:
Starter Suitable as a Replacement for Universal 299512

Does anybody know if the USCG code requires that starters for marine diesel
enginess have ignition protection? If so, it's worth paying the premium,
imo.
