My OB is a Honda 1985 BF100 4 stroke.  It tips up into the lazerette.  Over
the years, the PO has sprung the aft hinges on the lazerette as the engine does
jut up a fraction of an inch when all the way up.  I plan to pull out the
hinges and do some glass shim work to raise the aft edge of the lazerette to
take care of this.  I do not need help in tilting the engine.

Does your engine tilt into the lazerette?  Is  the Honda a 4
stroke or 2?  Mine is a 4 stroke and there is no way it would fit the “hole” in
the stern.  MY PO had a custom bracket built that moves the engine about 16-18”
aft and at the same position as the original mounting position.  It has
drawbacks, one I can NOT reach the engine controls (I do have a remote control
in the cockpit) and need to use a block and tackle to tilt the engine.  As I
said, it is not the best system but it works. I have 2 lines to move the
tilt/lock
lever.

I use a combo of this technique with a Honda 9.9 mounted
right on the transom (no
bracket) and fairly accessible in the lazerette.  The motor can be
steered and I can use a combo of tiller and
pointing the engine.  The
make way and then use it to steer via tiller with the motor in neutral does
work well in some situations.

Steering with
an outboard (that doesn’t turn) on the stern can be a problem and takes
practice.  I have a Honda 9.9 mounted on a custom bracket so it is about
18” aft of the transom. To steer I gun the en gine (high revs) in
reverse.  Then slip into neutral.  While in Neutral I can steer, then
in reverse again and gun it again, back to neutral, etc…  Not the best of
methods but it works

Thanks. I have an outboard mounted on the transom.  I
was just curious how others with outboards steer. I use to work on lakes in
the summer in a john boat and steerage wasn't an issue.  you just steer
the outboard.  I have also taken numerous classes on inboards where you
try to use propwalk, etc. Now I have an outboard that I can't steer easily
and was curious what others do.  Do you try to steer the outboard? DO
you treat it like an inboard and try to use propwalk.  It is just an set
up I am not familiar with.  THanks for any comments.

Backing an inboard is easy. A
center mounted OB would be better but the prop wash on the
rudder blade can
be problematic without a wheel. See also steerage way.

The trick is to spend as little
time as possible between being motionless and having steerage way. The rudder
on the C270 makes everything related to maneuvering a dream so I tend to
forget I also monitor wind and current before backing. I plan the maneuver to
go with what’s going to happen instead of gunning it to get steerage way or
being surprised and trying over react to gain control again. Since a C270 can
be spun in her own length (ok 30ft +) there are times when you go with it and
then do a 180 in place to head out.

The problem with outboard
maneuvering is I don’t think you can spin the boat in its own length, which
is a big disadvantage. Maybe a center mounted OB has a chance if it has handy
remote controls. I’d be glad to explain how, if someone wants to give it a
  try.
