How did you seal the top of the receptacle so that the oil doesn't spill out
when heeled?

I vote (and used) oil bath - mounted on centerline under vbert as far aft as
possible. Epoxied a PVC threaded "receptacle" (about 3") into place and mounted
the transducer in a drilled out plug. Filled with mineral oil.

Has worked great for 4 years with no leaks - yet :>)

Ted,
,, Commonly called "In Hull" or "Shoot Through" transducers, they will work on
a Catalina 27. That is, in most places inside the boat.

There's a ton of advice about the method of Mounting an IN HULL transducer.
Just do a GOOGLE for "In Hull mounting" to see them.

Really, they break down into two variations.. Glued or Oil bath..

1. GLUED:....... Epoxy or Silicone (I've heard of using Marine GOOP too)..

PRO:
Easy and quick to mount,... Silicone (and GOOP) relatively easy to remove (I
did a silicone method, worked fine)

CON:
Mounting unlikely to be VERTICAL (sound cone tipped), Hull MUST be solid
fiberglass-No voids,...
Glued area MUST be very Clean with NO bubbles in the glue, Epoxy hard to remove.

2. Oil Bath.. Methods of mounting Numerous !

PRO:
Transducer can be vertical, No worry about Voids in liquid. Oil can be any
cheap light weight oil (cooking oil or Mineral oil)

CON:
If it leaks-MESSY!, Requires Mechanical device (Pipe or container) to hold oil
and transducer, Stands High requiring Head Space,.. Once set up, difficult to
move.
