Hi Doug,

 

They are typically right up in the shadow of the rub rail and engraved right
into the gel coat. Unlike many boats they get applied after the full is out
of the mold form. When they are molded it you get to see a rectangular
impression where the type was set in the mold. On a Catalina there is not
such telltale mark just 2 or 3 inches of 3/8 to ½ high hand engraved
lettering. I’d be tempted to drag the edge of my finger nail along slowly to
feel for them.

I will have a look again but neither me nor the surveyor saw any numbers on
the transom. Are they typically on the hull below the hull to deck seal or
above? I posted a picture during survey of the transom in the album called
Doug's C27- no name yet...
