I had not; I figured, if enough fluid (mineral spirits?) had leaked out to
create the air bubble in the short span of time involved, it was clearly in
need of repair and further quick degradation.

THAT SAID, just for curiosity I just now unpacked the old compass, and the
bubble looks exactly as it had when we replaced it 3 years ago. I'm a bit
surprised actually.

In any case I'd only kept the old one should I have it repaired by a factory
authorized repair center and subsequently sold on eBay or elsewhere. Any
advice is appreciated.
