I just changed my halyards today! Mine went easily but the rigger said
sometimes he uses a bicycle chain to add enough weight to have it pass through.
He said then sometimes he has to remove the sheaves at the base of the mast to
get it thru. I just put low stretch line in, no wire. Not sure why you would
need wire. If its strength and non stretch you are looking for, just use racing
line.

Have you ever accidentaly let go of a wire/rope halyard? The ropes is heavier
than the wire and the halyard ends up at the top of the mast. If I was
changing halyards, I'd go the low stretch rope for 100% of the halyard. Just my
two cents.

Cheers, Mike

By the way, I am talking about the sheave at the masthead on a boat set up
for internal halyards.
