One thing I can tell you if you are heading off shore, don't count on your cell service. Here in Florida we lose cell service between 5-8 miles off shore. Make sure you have a good VHF with a high antenna if you are heading away from land. Depth charts are a must also. Hate to run into a shoal in an area you are not familiar with. Also have a GPS going at all times with a backtrack. So if all else fails and everything goes wrong..you can hit backtrack and follow your "bread crumb" trail home.
Take some basic tools..extra line...sail tape. More fuel than you think you'll need.
