Hi Art, Heli coils (correct spelling are indeed available and will work nicely.
They are basically a diamond shaped piece of wire rolled into a spring shpae.
the inner portion forms a standard thread that you can screw a drain pllug into
and the outer surface is the same as the tap that comes with the kit. The
problem you will face is getting the hole drilled and tapped without pulling
the transmission. An alternative solution that is cheaper and easier, but also
a bit cheesier is to use a self-expanding rubber drain plug. These are
available through many auto parts stores. They can be quite effective but they
often tend to leak a little and you need to keep the tool that coems with it to
change your oil. Hope this helps. Mike Hajdu (Catalina 270)

HEY ART - stopped by the club Sat PM & couldn't find your boat -  I tried. -
Had lunch with Dan Pilz Wed at MRYC...

before removing the tranny - call NAPA  on Alexis Rd - Describe your problem
- We used to have a product called a "HEALY COIL" spelling  may be goofed up -
back in the late 50's they worked great at fixing  buggered up spark plug
threads, engine oil drain plugs etc...    Don't know if they are still
avvailable.. .    They did work great however.

My 1984 Cat.27 is equipped with the Universal M-18 and HBW-50 Hurth
Transmission. The transmission drain plug is stripped. I was told I could
remove the old plug, and replace it with a self tapping drain plug. Or, I could
remove the transmission from the boat and have it repaired. I'm leaning toward
removal of the transmission, and repair as a long term solution. Does anyone
have first hand experience with removing a hurth transmission?

Thanks
