HEY ART - Did the guy that wanted $430 for a seal kit also give you a bid for the job...?
I suspect he was planning on WELDING a bead in the stripped threads and then re-cutting the threads...?    I don't remember any heat generation from the heli-coil repair - it's fairly straight forward fix - I'm getting old and that was 55 years ago now...   capt.bill

I was also told that I would need a new seal kit because of the heat generated. Is that heat generated during the Heli-coil repair, or removal of the drain plug? A mechanic quoted me a price in the area of $430 just for the seal kit for my Trans. Seems like there would be an alternative out there?

HEY ART - stopped by the club Sat PM & couldn't find your boat -  I tried. - Had lunch with Dan Pilz Wed at MRYC...

before removing the tranny - call NAPA  on Alexis Rd - Describe your problem - We used to have a product called a "HEALY COIL" spelling  may be goofed up - back in the late 50's they worked great at fixing  buggered up spark plug threads, engine oil drain plugs etc...    Don't know if they are still avvailable.. .    They did work great however.

My 1984 Cat.27 is equipped with the Universal M-18 and HBW-50 Hurth Transmission. The transmission drain plug is stripped. I was told I could remove the old plug, and replace it with a self tapping drain plug. Or, I could remove the transmission from the boat and have it repaired. I'm leaning toward removal of the transmission, and repair as a long term solution. Does anyone have first hand experience with removing a hurth transmission?

Thanks
