The transom has a cutout in the dead center to accomodate a smaller, lower 
profile outboard.  In 74, when the boat was built, O/bs were smaller and 
lighter.  The 8 HP 2 stroke Merc fit in it, but the newer motor will not tip up 
out of the water without a lot of cutting with a sawzall to open the top of the 
cutout 3-4" taller and 6-8" wider.  I don't think that the removeable panel 
would be strong enough to mount a bracket and motor combination, even if 
securely glassed in.  I'd love to mount it midships on the transom.  If I cut 
away too much, I cut  into the backstay chainplate.  Splitting the backstay is 
an option, but.... a whole nother bag of worms.  Rob Kedenburg
