Back 3 years ago, when I purchased my Catalina 27 I made up a list of
questions.

I am on the Chesapeake Bay just south of Annapolis. I am contemplating how
to move it to The Chesapeake, maybe considering sailing it (wait for good
weather).

I have a few questions about this boat.

1. What conditions are the bulkheads, in particular where the chain plates
are bolted in? I have looked at many C27s that had rot in that area.

2. Is there a visible crack where the lead bolts to the hull (outside)?

3. What is the condition of the keel bolts, are they rusted or have they
been upgraded to the stainless?

4. Have the spreader connections (where they attach to mast) been replaced
with the upgrade kit to stainless?

5. Are there any soft spots anywhere on the deck?

6. What type engine and what size and what condition is it?
7. What condition and how old are the sails?
8. How does the asking price compare to other Cat 27s in the area?
9. How are the cushions, do they need to be recovered (expensive)?

When you look at boats, and you should look at several, take pictures and
save them in a folder (even the ones you discount). Take notes and write
your first opinions down.

Subject: [IC27A] C27 Shopping Questions...

Hi all.
New member, first time poster.
I am shopping for a Catalina 27 in the Pacific Northwest & thought it might
be a good idea to mine the collective wisdom of the group to get some ideas
of good things to look for when shopping. Some specific questions:
What are the differences b/w various years of the 27?
Are hull blisters much of an issue w/ these boats? Some years worse?
I understand they added molded exterior chain lockers in later model
years... when did these start & do people like them?

>From skulking around the internet, it seems like these are some of the
things to watch for. I would appreciate any comments:
backing plates on deck hardware
keel bolts (does Catalina have a fix for this?)
Lower shroud through deck bolts/backing plates
Spreader sockets (did they ever fix this & what year)
For folks w/ the outboard: how does that work in a seaway? Cavitation? Power
ok?

Thanks much for your thoughts. I am looking forward to learning here!
