I think I will give your solution a try. I can't imagine why Catalina would have used the ones they did. Blocks need to swivel! It looks like I'll need to buy the cars, then just add a block to them. Are the springs necessary or helpful?

P.S. After 40 years of motorcycling I have realized that whenever I got a new bike, I would spend the next 2 or 3 years personalizing it with components that I felt either added to the bike's abilities, or improved on the original equipment. It would appear that the same phenomenon exists in the sailing world.
I had the same issue with the rail mounted blocks for the jib sheets. The never seemed to swivel or tilt properly to provide a fair lead from jib to winch. Years ago I replaced them with the traditional jib fairlead slide blocks that are held erect by springs at the base. They work perfectly and I have never looked back. The blocks that I purchased are from Garhauer.
