Andy,

These won't work at all on the C270's cabin top sheeting. The main winches
are shared using clutches and stoppers. The port side serves 3 functions and
the starboard four functions. The turning block you are discussing is a
hefty midsized beast with a single cam stopper that allows the winch to be
cleared, used for other functions (reefing, etc.), and then retake the sheet
load.

The track car blocks sold by Garhauer complete assemblies consisting of the
car, spring, and block. Check them out on the Garhauer web site.

Hi Ron, my 81 C27 has the blocks that swivel and have the spring, I think
they work great. I have had other boats that did not have the spring and the
blocks tended to clank around on the deck when they did not have a load on
them so the springs hold the blocks upright.

Thanks Andy,

I think I will give your solution a try. I can't imagine why Catalina would
have used the ones they did. Blocks need to swivel! It looks like I'll
need to buy the cars, then just add a block to them. Are the springs
necessary or helpful?

P.S. After 40 years of motorcycling I have realized that whenever I got a
new bike, I would spend the next 2 or 3 years personalizing it with
components that I felt either added to the bike's abilities, or improved on
the original equipment. It would appear that the same phenomenon exists in
the sailing world.

I had the same issue with the rail mounted blocks for the jib sheets. The
never seemed to swivel or tilt properly to provide a fair lead from jib to
winch. Years ago I replaced them with the traditional jib fairlead slide
blocks that are held erect by springs at the base. They work perfectly and I
have never looked back. The blocks that I purchased are from Garhauer.
