Joe,

I'll take this on, if no one else will.. LOL

It sounds like the line is twisted against the lay of the fibers. That creates
a HOCKLE.
IMHO, there's not much you can do to avoid the problem .. That is, with the
line you're using.
I'm guessing that you're using the ubiquitous STA-SET, or similar line.

I'm not aware that you've said that you Raced ? If, NO, then I'd think about
using a different type of line for your Sheets.

I got rid of the HOCKLE problem for good by using a Non-Hockle line.
Racers and those who worry about obtaining Top efficiency will probably
shudder, but, I replaced all my Jib/Genny sheets with..
"Gasp".... REGATTA Single Braid.. line.
I've used it for years and will Never go back to Sta-set, et al.
Racers and those who love to be "efficient" hate me for saying it, but I Love
Regatta Braid !!

REGATTA Braid.. (recommended by Practical Sailor)
Has a bit more stretch 3 % at 15 of Breaking. As opposed to Sta-set at 2.4 %
(Sta-set X, 1.6 %)
But in our smallish boats and when cruising, Regatta performs just fine
Here's my take on the Good, Bad and the Ugly of Regatta Braid

Good: NO hockles, Soft on hands, Grabs a winch drum securely, runs freely, a
little cheaper than most, wraps up and stores easily.
Bad: It sucks up water like a sponge (dries quickly though), a bit more
stretch, chafes easier than Sta-set type line.
Ugly: It gets dirty easily (washes well, try Oxy-clean).

If you have a problem with Hockles, change out to Regatta Braid line..

Along these lines. does anyone have a suggestion on how to keep the genoa
sheets from twisting when they are run through a ST winch? I just this summer
added a pair of Lewmar 30ST winches and they are wonderful except that after
you crank in the sheets and then release by lifting the sheets off the drum
they twist themselves into a small loop/knot as they try to pass through the
sheet car on the rail.

I am open to suggestions on how to stop this.

If you find your mainsheet lines twisting (other forces tend to cause this to
happen), be aware there is a small set-screw in the blocks that can be set
where the problem is to keep them from rotating, helps in this case....

Make sure that the mainsheet lines are not twisted against each other.
If they are, friction can keep them from running through the blocks.

I have the same problem on my 81 standard rig. I think it is that mt
traveler lines are either too large for the blocks or the line has lost
flexibility so it does not run free. I am going to downsize the mainsheet line
one size and see if that helps. Could be that the blocks need lubrication also.
I am going to start with the cheapest fix and move my way up.

          Fellow 27C Owners,
          I have a 1986 27TR. I just moved up from a O'Day 25 C/B. Love the
Catalina. Amasing the difference in 2 feet. Question. On the O'Day if I
released the mainsheet the mainsail would swing freely to almost 80-to-90
degrees off center. Whenever I got in a blow, just release the mail and dump
the wind.

On my 27C I release the mainsail and the boom will travel 5-to-10
degrees off center. That's OK if 5-to-10 degree adjustment is what I wanted. To
get anything more I have to slack the mainsheet (lines run aft), leave the
helm, and phyically push the boom out. If I ever have to "dump the main" forget
it. It won't swing freely. Help!!!! How can I get the main to release quickly
and freely?
