They increase the diameter thinking it will help make it easier to sail when in fact most of the time it adds friction and increases crew fatigue instead. Any line larger than 5/16” has been super sized at some point. There is also a tendency among racers and performance sailors to convert to lower stretch line, which is fine, except what makes a great halyard maybe way to stiff to run freely through a block set. I think it is that mt traveler lines are either too large for the blocks or the line has lost flexibility so it does not run free. I am going to downsize the mainsheet line one size and see if that helps. Could be that the blocks need lubrication also. I am going to start with the cheapest fix and move my way up. >>> "dennisv1030" <dennisv1030@ yahoo.com> 7/12/2010 3:16 PM >>> Fellow 27C Owners, I have a 1986 27TR. I just moved up from a O'Day 25 C/B. Love the Catalina. Amasing the difference in 2 feet. Question. On the O'Day if I released the mainsheet the mainsail would swing freely to almost 80-to-90 degrees off center. Whenever I got in a blow, just release the mail and dump the wind. On my 27C I release the mainsail and the boom will travel 5-to-10 degrees off center. That's OK if 5-to-10 degree adjustment is what I wanted. To get anything more I have to slack the mainsheet (lines run aft), leave the helm, and phyically push the boom out. If I ever have to "dump the main" forget it. It won't swing freely. Help!!!! How can I get the main to release quickly and freely?
