Continued unsuccessful cranking without draining the waterlift muffler
can also force water into the valves. I think my owners manual (engine
manual?) says something like drain after every 20 seconds of cranking
without ignition. Minor PITA to drain too. See the bottom left text
on second page of this article...

Well the symptoms were it was not getting fuel. Then the fuel pump was
rebuilt and fuel was making its way through everything but it still
wouldn't start. So the mechanic took it apart and compression tested
it---No compression. Took off the valve cover to find water in the
valves. There was a recent time I was heeled over on a shoal and had
to get a tow off so it was conceivable water came up the exhaust. I
hauled the engine out and took it in to the mechanic. He took it apart
and found the entire inside pitted and trashed. Said water had to be
in there for at least a year to do that. That would have been prior to
my purchasing it. He says he can rebuild it but it will just have some
other issues down the road so its better to find another.

Hi All!
I have a 1986 C27 with a Universal 18 that is no longer
alive. A rebuild is not possible as the inside was
completely pitted by water and likely to have issues down
the road even with a rebuild. So I am looking for a new
used engine. It's not my forever boat so I don't want to
spend an arm and a leg. I am curious as to what other
engine options there are. What will fit the space? I
looked at a 3-cyl Yanmar yesterday but I think it's about
1.5 inches too big. Any ideas? BTW, I'm in Florida if
anyone knows of anything and will drive to surrounding
states.
Thanks---Amy
