Phil,

The cockpit gauge panel on my particular 1984 model, has the standard KEYED...
Off/Gauges on/Start (momentary) rotary switch.
Next to it, on the right hand, is the Glow Plug Toggle switch.
I had considered changing to a Keyed switch that has both Start and Glow plug,
but it was, I felt at the time, an unnecessary expense.
I've since come to appreciate the ability to either push down or pull up on the
Glow Plug switch.
As example, I can use the toe of my shoe to push down while I'm doing other
things. LOL

Another "modification" that I have done and would recommend, is a parallel
switch down below (inside of the engine compartment).
I can start the engine at that location as well as up in the cockpit.
That, and a small solenoid also parallel to the cockpit switch, with a two
position switch.. allows Cockpit/Compartment/Battery Direct to the Starter
Solenoid, Giving several options for starting. They are all Fused of course.

I've also added a "Bump" switch to the electric fuel pump.. useful when having
to BLEED the fuel line.
All this allows many options for dealing with engine/fuel issues. And were
simple installations.

Other options to the engine are

Ralph,

What do you have for a starter switch?

Reading this made me think about how the C270 panel works. The key ignition
switch has OFF-ON-(Glow Plug - momentary) and then a starter button.

Rob,

Since a Glow Plug is simply a Heating Element, There's not much that could be
could be considered "Damage" done by running it longer than necessary. You
probably just Shortened the Life of the heater. Like any "incandescent light
bulb" it has a finite life.

A glow plug is one of those "forgotten" parts of the engine. One should carry a
spare.

The good news is that they are easy to change out.

The more basic question I would ask is.. Why didn't you replace the Switch with
an " Momentary " rather than a common On/Off.

Get rid of the On/Off.

I replaced mine with a Single Pole/Double Throw (SPDT) Momentary switch so I
can hold the Bat Handle either UP or Down.

When released, it returns to the center OFF position.

An even better replacement switch , IMHO, would be a "Push to Make" Momentary.
Similar to the Starter switch on many devices.

Of course.. Always use WATERPROOF switches..

hi all,

after replacing a faulty glow plug switch on my instrument panel with a fixed
position toggle switch i've become suddenly faulty myself in remembering to
turn the darn thing off when motoring. aarrgghh! am i doing any damage to
anything other than smacking my forehead out of frustration?
