I'll try to get photos. I stand in front of my horse, rub the spot
with my carrot stick, middle of chest under the neck area, then go
through the phases and stand there waiting...both horses blink, look
at me and I know they're thinking. When I do the same thing at the
neck and hip, both horses will step away usually at phase 2 or 3.

When I try to get them to step back with the CS from the chest and
they don't, I walk towards them and lightly touch the same spot with
my hand and both horses will move back with no resistance.

In the troubleshooting section of my booklet it says to tap if phase 4
doesn't work--but of course I had forgotten my book so I didn't do
that, I walked to them and used my hand. So--if my hand works, why do
I need to use the stick?

The horses are standing facing me. I point to the left with my left
hand, and foot, the rope is in my left hand--the horse doesn't move.
I lift the stick which is in my right hand, the horse doesn't move, I
throw the rope of the carrot stick over to the horse and off they go
to the left. I stand still and they go around and around and around
while I wind them in and eventually they stop facing me....I'm hoping
with practice they'll get the idea that I'm not trying to lunge.
