OK, for the heck of it, try this:  take the carrot stick out of the picture.

Practice a little backing with your hand.  Then use your finger to ask.  You 
can click and treat if you want, or say good boy, and pet / scratch.

Then take a pen (or a very small stick, like a popsicle stick) and try it 
with the pen in your hand, only sticking out an inch.

Does it make a difference?  If so, what is the difference to them?  Is it 
the feeling of stiff substance?

Possible they like to have a "feel" coming from living thing to living 
thing, and may be aren't aware of how to respond to tools yet.
