Isn't she an African Gray? Grays don't generally start talking until they are over a year old. Smokey was 13 months when we got her and was very quiet at first. After she settled for a few days, she started making a few noises - the phone ringing, dropping a bomb, etc. She knew a few words when we got her - her name, hello, and a couple of others. When within weeks, she started practicing her words and sounds, and then there seemed to be no limit in what she could say. Grays are more introverted than many parrots. Most visitors here don't have a clue how many words and phrases Smokey has in her vocabulary. She was even careful about talking to us for the first month or so. From everything I've read, she's pretty typical of the species. She'd only been here a few weeks when she said in a very deep, proper voice, "THIS!" We heard it a few times, but couldn't imagine why she'd being saying "THIS!" with such emphasis. Within a few days, she had the whole phrase mastered.
