Wow Carl, thank you very much. I have searched the Web high and low and
haven't found info like this. The only negative thing I could have to say
about Icinga is the documentation, it seems incomplete.

I have over 175 servers, 20 switches, and a few printers I need to organize,
your help is going to make this a lot easier.

Thanks again.

This is strongly tied to how you have the master icinga.cfg file set up.
If you have "cfg_dir" statements in there, you can create a {hostgroup}.cfg
(insert proper hostgroup in there) with a stanza of "define hostgroup { ...
}" in it and then specify a statement of "hostgroups {hostgroup}" (from
above) in the host configuration on each individual host to join the two.

Hostgroups can be used not only to group individual hosts together but
also to attach services to, so you may want to explore that as well.

All hostgroups are "custom"; it's the monitoring administrator that
links the two notions. In a "bare" configuration each host stands alone and
apart from all others -- it is the admin that "classifies" hosts into
groups. It's worth noting that any given host may be a member of any number
of hostgroups, so bear that in mind when laying out your overall scheme.

    Cheers!
