Wow Carl, thank you very much. I have searched the Web high and low and haven't found info like this. The only negative thing I could have to say about Icinga is the documentation, it seems incomplete.

In a "bare" configuration each host stands alone and apart from all others -- it is the admin that "classifies" hosts into groups. It's worth noting that any given host may be a member of any number of hostgroups, so bear that in mind when laying out your overall scheme.
