so it's an LGPL product that I buy with patches but no source as
binary-only? It sounds terribly illegal to me for them to do that, and
against my ideals to give them money for it.

Their site claims that:
A. The wine parts are unpatched, and that they don't give the sources because you can get the same sources from the main wine site, which is run and maintained by them anyways, so they actually do give the sources (they don't actually claim that last part, but it's the part I know to be true, so there you go).
B. They have additions to wine. Some of them are freely distributable using other licenses (such as the tkwineconfig tools, very recommended as they do the initial configuration quite easy).
C. There are yet some parts which are entirely closed source. These only link with wine, and therefor this is legal.

As I am yet to see the actual product (Hetz has offered me to have a look on his computer, but I have not got around to doing so yet), I cannot comment as to the likelyhood of these claims. I will say that if these claims are correct, then they are within their rights to claim what they do.

I'll also mention that, despite the fact that Alexander Juliard, the person holding the vaulve on the wine CVS, is a codeweavers employee, and despite the fact that the reboot work on the free wine seems to be in direct competition with XOO, I have seen nothing but genuine desire to get the implemented in the free wine from him. I think we can say here that, lacking any evidance to the contrary, CodeWeavers are part of the good guys. It also appears that their product does give significant and hard worked advantage over the open source version.

I could not care less about icons, and I can even live without
associations. what's with the DLL registering, doesn't the install
process of office take care of it?

It does, but that probably takes place after reboot, using programs that are run by explorer the next time you log in. Since wine does not (yet) have support for that, that part is not taking place on its own, and these processes do not take place correctly.

I thought I just copy the system
directory of my win2k partition and be good to go... I guess I am
getting funny stares from all the other list members here...
Not at all. Doing MS based wine installation is a supported option, and should give you a head start. Without a doubt, some of wine's problems with MS Office are with office's installer. You may have to do some tweaks with which DLLs to take from the windows installation, and which to take from wines, but you should be able to get everything working this way.

There is also the application database, in which you may be able to find useful information. Try http://appdb.winehq.org/, and in particular http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=31

Current free wine cannot do any of the above by itself. You can look
at the mailing list of the wine-devel to see that the "reboot" process
it starting to be written by Schachar...

ok then... say I buy XOO for 200 shekels, no I see they went up to 250
shekels... can I really only install it on a single machine and not
many? doesn't that violate the wine license again ?!

You can install the wine part on as many machines as you like, just not the proprietary part. If you buy it, give me a call. I want to have a look at it too.

The latest version of CrossOver office is also running MS Access
97,2000 and Office XP. None of those programs runnning well with the
free wine (unless you want to start copying DLL's from Windows and
over-come the "reboot" problems.

I'd love to know what that involves, because I know that some people DID
manage to do it on their own, so how bad can it be? hasn't anyone
released a HOWTO or even a free script to do those things?

appdb is your friends (more or less) again.

bahh. lucky I'm no conspiracist, the whole wine/codeweavers deal smells
fishy to me... the Free alternative to a closed product turns out to be
closed as well, how rediculous is that?

Like I said before, I expected the work on wineboot to be led mostly by Dmitry O. Paun and myself, as the non-CW employees who cared most about it. As it turned out, Alexander is very involved with that as well. So far, things don't smell conspiracy to me. Maybe after I have a look at XOO I'll think otherwise. Maybe I won't.

Ira.
