Like Sharad said its recommended to install on hard disk. If you use
an external hard disk it is likely to run slower (due to USB being
slower than IDE) and besides the continuous read-write operations
required when running OS from it can reduce its life.
You could refer www.pendrivelinux.com which may give you some pointers.

If you're just trying to do installation for evaluation purposes its
suggested to use a virtualisation software like virtualbox before you
decide to switch.

See above website.
