Thanx alot Nalin ,

I think ur post is great bcos all that u said was what I have been
doing so far ; That means I might b on the right track.

In my college ,me and one of my friend compiled a linux using LFS.
It helped alot in gaining linux hands-on experience. And we finally
ended up in completing a Linux Distro based on slackware.
Now we further extended our project in something hybrid of type but
surely not which have not been tried, i.e making an OS that can
feature both Windows capability and Linux capability at compatible
layer. I dedicated 2 months in R&D , just to see if the possibilty of
making such an OS was possible or not.

The concept is surely feasible not at application layer (WINE) only
but also at the kernel level. But requires huge programming ,on making
a special subsystem to support POSIX and WIN32 environment. This is
not at all possible until unless, we assign 3 times the all IIT-LUG
programmers at the task. So the idea was good but not feasible at
present resources. This idea also flamed up an issue on Microsofts
Corp. Licensing terms been offended through the project in the
college. But the solution to issue was to re-write the
systemcalls(using opensource technolgies) for a new hybrid kernel to
support the homogenous environment of both the OS(s). This concept
could actually obsolete WINE project itself , if implemeted.

That was my idea but dont know much about the stuff. I can also be
wrong at some point , but that could be only corrected by pursuit of
knowledge. So I decided not to make such an OS right now, but learn
about the kernels first and then to develop something hypothetical.

So didnt anyone tried any OS/161, xv6 & pint OS or any other
thing ?..

Anything else on kernels or any info which anybody wish to share about
Operating Systems.
