Stumbled across a gem of a book the other day:

The Western Railroad Supply Co. Railway Signaling Accessories and Track
Appliance Catalog for 1938.

This book features everything from wig wag crossing signals and their
circuit diagrams to electrical testing and measuring instruments.

Question: WRRS offered a somewhat primitive dragging equipment detector
and it is not clear to me how this would be wired so as to alert the train
crew of defects. What technology was available in 1938 to support this type
of installation? a dedicated lineside detector signal of some sort?
integrated into CTC or ABS systems? Any ideas?

Thanks
