Simple. There are better products than M$ produces, but they are quite
expensive by themselves, and they run on Win, and other expensive
platforms. e.g. Lightwave3d.

For starters, open source alternatives to professional multimedia tools
are not there. Gimp is the only one thats coming up fast enough to give
photoshop a run for its money.
