Just because the company name is the same does not mean that the cards are
similar. If i remember right , the Trident 9000 was a VESA VGA card , abou 6
yrs old and came with a max of 2 MB RAM (correct me anybody if i am wrong,
my memory might be failing me!) and your current card is an accelerated AGP
. The similarity between the chipsets is akin to chalk and cheese.

Start using Xfree86 3.3.5 . You might be having an old version of X.

SuperProbe is dated now and does not always detect chipsets correctly. It
used to detect my old card , a Cirrus Logic Set as a Video 7 Card.

do a cat /proc/dma and cat /proc/interrupts and check for conflicts.
Even GPM may be conflicting , so you may have to remove the line from your
init script. Check that your devices have been made correctly in the /dev/
directory. Try running the script for making device definations ( it is in
that directory).

Could you give some info on what messages are being thrown on screen -LI
etc?

 You are welcome
