Thanks for your prompt reply. I will check the site for Trident Chipsets, hope that will correct my first problem.
gpm is not conflicting with X, because gpm is being explicitly killed from the script startx. I have checked that
out. Must be something else. If I can get my video card running, I hope it will correct that problem too.
About LILO, prompt should be present before timeout, 'cause I am getting the prompt, but I will double check that.
The only difficulty is though it is showing LILO prompt, I cannot type anything there. So after a wait of 5 seconds
it is booting to the default kernel.

have you checked up the docs at http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.4/trident1.html for the level of support for the Trident
Chipset in Xfree 3.3.3 and above? (please check whether you are sitting on XFree86-3.3.2)
