The idea is a good one . However, there is a caveat . The problem is that
Neither AOL nor Microsoft have as yet made out their protocols
explicitly. The IETF draft has a lot of should's but no specific details. I
think AOL took over ICQ fairly recently so interoperability could become a
pipe dream . Blast these idiots!:-).
What Indro and I thought about was a ve r r y simple chat type client,
where the clients are connected via IP Address like ICQ .An Instant
Messenger would then be a single user chat system ,which is just what it is
in many cases.
The problem we came up against was how to get a service running where ip
addresses are logged on connecting. A message should be sent on connecting
which would inform a service on some central server about one's IP address.
Then a simple socket connection can be set up for a chat after looking up IP
addresses from this server.
The weak point was the server. Where do we host it? Or is a solution
possible without a dedicated server. A solution using a major domo and an
automated mail on connection establishment was considered, but would have a
time lag based on mail delivery times , which is indeterminate.
Any suggestions , anyone?
