Yes you can. if you login from another machine, do a su and login( as
oot)( you can also use sudo) , you can run shutdown.
Your problem seems to be related to the HDD. What have you given hdparm
as
parameters?
do a linux single, login , and remove hdparm from your rc.d config
files.
When you now boot correctly, then experiment to get settings which you
can
live with.
