Hi Everyone,
I have been trying to configure Apache server on my Linux box but haven't
been very successful so far. On reading the various manuals I found that it
is very imperative that one gets the "It Worked" page by default without
doing any changes in the /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf file but sadly I haven't
been so lucky. This led me to go in for a freash install of the OS and
nothing changed. On making the fresh install of Redhat 6.2, at the very
first boot I get the error " Starting Httpd ----[ Failed ] httpd: cannot
dtermine local host name. Use the server name directive to set it manually."
Info of my Linux Box:
IP address: 191.127.191.99
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Host name : Testpad
Haven't mentioned any Network or Broadcast Address.
Below are the entries that I made using the netconf tool:
I have made entries in the defaults tab only:
Adminstrator e-mail : root@Testpad
Domain IP Address : 191.127.191.99 ( On mentioning this IP address, http
deamon generates an error "[WARN] Name virtual host 191.127.191.99 has no
virtual hosts" . On removing this entry no errors are generated by the http
deamon.)
Server Name : Testpad
Document Root: (Left it blank)
Error log : /var/log/httpd/error_log
Transfer Log:( Left it Blank)
Agent log :(---------do-------)
Referer log:(---------do----------)
Script Alias : /cgi-bin/ "/home/httpd/cgi-bin/"
CGI SetUID User : Nobody
CGI SetUID Group : Nobody
Listen to Port : 80
pid file : /var/run/http.pid
timeout : 300
Below are the entries which I commented / uncommented / modified in the
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf file. Rest of the remains as it was initially:
ServerType standalone
#ExtendedStatus on
Port 80
StartServers 8
ServerRoot "/etc/httpd"
#HostnameLookups on
#Listen 3000
#Listen 191.127.191.99:80
#Bind address 127.0.0.1
ServerAdmin root@testpad
NameVirtualHost 191.127.192.99
These are the places I fiddled with after reading the
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf file. I guess I am missed or messed up something
preety small but very vital with my ever present stupidity. Please lemme
knw what can be done in order to get the thing up and running.
With these settings when I type the URL http://Testpad/ it generates a page
which says " 403 Netscape FORBIDDEN : YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ACCESS / IN
THIS SERVER".
After the last reinstall of OS I didn't fiddle with any of the
configurations. Yes! I got the "Httpd Failed" error again at the very first
boot "Starting Httpd----[ Failed ] : Httpd: Cannot determine local host
name. Use the ServerName Directive to set it manually ". I set the server
name to Testpad manually using netconf tool, and on typing the URL
http://testpad/ I got the same "FORBIDDEN" page. Dunno whats wrong here.
