Why use Kudzu??
Fire up minicom in setup mode (minicom -s)
Change the serial port to /dev/ttyS1
Save changes as df1
Exit
Then the minicom terminal, type in AT
If you get a AT - all's well

PS: also, make a symlink called /dev/modem to /dev/ttyS1 and, try out
wvdialconf
