i got sufficient number of framebuffer based graphic viewing and
presentation software with the help of the links you have given
me and a littlie bit of searching. i will be soon ready with a cd
based linux platform for presentation. a lot of thanks to all
those who have helped me so generously. the main advantage
of this over knoppix like full cd based distros is that it will be
lighter hence more faster and less resource hungry yet will
retain the main advantage of knoppix. does this lug has any
suggestion for me about it?

now the vesa issue. i have a lot of doz tools which let the
vesa mode switch between different resolutions and color
depth. it requires direct access of hardware by that tool.
but this is not possible in linux because the vesa support
in kernel has this limitation and the kernel wont let apps
to access hardware that way. as result 'fbset' will return
ioctl error. what we need is a kernel patch. i have heard
about a accelerated vesa device. what is it? i also can
not understand the output of # man vesa. it talks about
a vesa xf86config entry. i am confused about it.

now the monitor flickering issue. modern day pnp monitors
automatically synchronizes to the cards refresh rate. but
the problem arises possibly due to the fact that they have
inbuilt factory settings for vesa mode. 800x600-60 is one
of them. when the cards refresh rate matches to these modes
the monitor switches to the factory setting. the mismatch takes
place due to fact that neither monitor nor the card is perfect
and human eye is quite sensitive in this regard. in ranges near
50 hz the fluorescent lamps running on ac power makes the
situation worse. i have not found any tool yet which can change
the vesa standard refresh rates. does any one know about any
such tool?

PS. i am quite luck in this regard. i have a sis6326 with 4mb vram
and microtek digisync monitor. thouge it flickers a little in generic
mode all of the vesa modes are absolutely flickerless and smooth.
