X is dying in exactly 20 mins, if left unattended.
No, absolutely nothing. Initially there were complaints about fonts and font paths, but even after resolving these, the problem persists. I have read all the /var/log files, but could find no clue. I am foxed by the 20 minutes. Knoppix 3.1 uses XFree86 4.2, whereas woody uses 4.1. Can it be that 4.1 is facing some problem with Cyrix, because the problem is not visible with Knoppix 3.1. One way to verify this could be to replace the Cyrix with the P-I on the same MOBO. Shall try this out tonight.
Didn't you say that xscreensaver was killing X instantly (I deleted that mail, unfortunately)? If that is so, then your Gnome (or KDE or whatever) desktop is configured to run a screensaver after 20 minutes of inactivity (a very common default setting, by the way). Find out how to change that and set it to something really long.
But in my opinion you should really investigate why xscreensaver is killing X.
