you can try any of these (but I am not sure about the output)

1) open your XFree.... file and find out the line *driver=vga* and change vga 
to vesa. 

2) my system is based on Pentium 233 MHz & OS is Debian Woody.
I had problem to play the MIDI files, since it cracked the sound. but MP3 
/.wav had no prob. then I compiled the kernel & set the processor according 
to my system. now everything is going fine.  [and It has become my habit to 
always compile the kernel for a new installation ]. that's why I can tell you 
to compile your kernel based on your system ( set the processor to the cyrix 
model you have ) to check if it would help you or not.
