People on Debian are known to have faced the similar kind of trouble u mention. The 
most probably cause of the crash could be a chipset bug which has been worked around 
in later drivers and XFree86.

Anyways, the commonest solution which has worked for most people is one or a 
combination of the following -- upgrade to XFree4.2.x, recompiling the kernel without 
BIOS support/APM support,  upgrade to a later version of KDE than is shipped with 
Woody.

To explore the xscreensaver crash, recompile xscreeensaver with debug symbols, so that 
u can do a back/stack trace using the core. You may want to look at 
http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/bugs.html in case you want specific pointers in this 
direction.
