Hi,

I have been following this thread for sometime.

I believe operators like BSNL, Reliance, Airtel, Hutch will never provide us reliable Internet services at our place of choice as those places do not fit into their profit objectives. Moreover, their tariff will be always sky high.

The only option for people like us (Linux users - believing in open source and free world) is to set up WLAN at our places. Adjoining places in the radius of a few 100 meters will be benefited too.

I suggest all such places like WBUT and other Tech colleges should setup Wireless Access Points (make one with Orinoco PCI card and Linux box) including finding ways to cover college hostel and campus which will benefit more than one individual.

I have a small Linux based WLAN at my home.

I can provide all the required expertise.

So what about it then ? (Want to beat Pune and Bangalore in this race ?)

with Regards,
ASHWIN

Hi Sayamindu

Am not too sure, but Airtel has reduced their Rs 599/- a month charges some
time ago. Do speak with an Airtel guy.

I use Hutch-GPRS on my Treo600 and at times to connect via my Laptop too.
Works fairly well. Havent travelled much using the laptop, but over the
phone,I check my mails, browse the net, stay in touch over MSN/Yahoo/AIM
using the same, telnet/ftp to my servers' using the same.

Hutch charges 199/- p.m and 50 paise per 10KB.

Subject: [ilug-cal] [OT] Suggestions on Internet connections

Hi,
As many of you probably know, nowadays, I spend Tuesday to Saturday
outside Kolkata in my college hostel.
I take my laptop to my hostel, but I am yet to find a way to connect to
the internet from the hostel.
Of late, I have been looking at the various options, and GPRS seems to
be the only viable one.
We get BSNL (Sarisha tower) in the hostel, along with Airtel. My Hutch
connection works, but the signal is really weak (tower is usually
Diamond Harbour or Falta). Reliance does not work.

I believe Sarisha falls in the Bengal circle of BSNL (not the Kolkata
one), and I don't think BSNL Bengal provides GPRS service.

Airtel has something called Airtel Mobile Office which they offer at a
flat rate of Rs 600 per month.

Any other suggestions/experiences of people with GPRS from Airtel would
be very helpful.

-thanks-
Sayamindu

PS: My college is about 10 minutes walking distance from Sarisha, and
around 20 minutes drive from Diamond Harbour/Raichak.
