Not OT definitely! My ListAdmin persona seems to have thrown an OT scare into
the posters ;-) BTW, the person to address in case of OT clarification is the
***LISTADMIN*** and not "Indra", the two are quite separate and distinct
personalities! :)

The likely reason is that the on-board modem doesn't work under the version of
Linux distribution being shipped by ACER. In fact, when I purchased my lappy
from ACER nearly 20 months back, it came with a sticker on the bottom that said
Data/Fax/Voice modem doesn't work on linux.

Well of course it does, provided you are willing to grab the correct version of
slmodem drivers and play around with kernel recompilation and ALSA stuff. It did
for me, of course YMMV.

You can do these :

1. Call up the ACER regional manager, he used to sit somewhere at APJ House,
Park Str. Seek clarification. Get in touch with Acer India, Sales, Distribution,
Marketing Promotions GM, based out of B'lore and fax + e-mail a protest letter
from ILUG-Cal, after collecting as many sigs as possible.

2. Advertisers are responsible for information content in their ads as are ad
agencies, try to find out from the ad which agency is handling their account.
Generally, the name is sometimes mentioned in small print on the edges of the
ad's outline. As consumers, you can get in touch with them and lodge your
protest.

3. Get in touch with Consumers Action Forum and seek their help for redressal of
misinformative ad campaign.

4. Litigation is the last and least likely option, and you need to seriously
consider if we have the wherewithal for something like that.

cheers,
-indra.
