my x-log file shows a fatal error. And I dont have
prob with the monitor vert/horiz sync.

That option isnt for installation, this is when u
start booting after sometines a graphical screen comes
with a progress bar and a picture of a computer above
it. it comes becoz there is a package called 'rhgb'
(redhat graphical boot). that package, if used in the
kernel options while booting gives that graphical
progress screen. to deactivate it, open grub.conf:
# vi /etc/grub.conf
identify the line
---------------------------------------------------
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-1.667 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
---------------------------------------------------
and just delete the word rhgb from it

to change the color depth use the following command:
system-config-display
in terminal or the 'Run' dialog.
