Hi Manas,

I too tried out some new distros in the past one week. Its been a
loooong time since I laid my hands on a m/c to install linux. I felt
almost like a newbie!!

Well, I tried out FC3 ... but it could not determine my laptop's
resolution of 1280x800 correctly ... moreover, it installed way too
many apps and services than I liked ... may be I shouldnt have chosen
the custom option and rather should have gone for the desktop option
for installation.

Then I tried Ubuntu ... I had already tried out Gnoppix, Knoppix,
XFLD, Freeduc-cd, DamnSmallLinux live cds on my laptop ... liked the
look and feel of Gnoppix ... also evolution came with it by default
... also found from the Ubuntu site that they are pretty much
committed to bring out releases every 6 months regulary and provide
support for each release for the next 18 months ... I liked this
approach very much.

I downloaded warty release of Ubuntu (Hoary is due in April, u can get
the test versions of it if u feel like it), installed it ... pretty
straight forward stuff ... even in expert mode ... then I really
really liked it when I saw that it determined my laptop monitors
resolution correctly!!

Then I downloaded the latest versions of the "main" packages via
synaptic ... then today, I downloaded Qt3 designer ... feels quite
good ... only that Firefox in it is 0.80 and they discourage
installing the new one, synaptic wont recognize that u have installed
this new one they say ... but if u r ok with that and not shaky about
custom package installations download the latest firefox from the
firefox site (not ubuntu) and install it manually.

I am just sad that evolution does not work when I am inside the
office!!! FC 3 and Ubuntu both ... the firewall/proxy at work seems to
hamper its connection ... I dont have a net connection at home (which
is quite a temporary arrangement), so I will have to wait till I can
connect my laptop to the net from outside a firewall and check out
evolution ... if it works fine, I am gonna ask the network guys to
open the exchange port in the firewall list ... donno if I melt there
hardened hearts!!

Well, to keep it sweet and simple, go for Ubuntu if you can live with
Gnome ... I haven't tried to learn if KDE is installable on it through
synaptic. But then maybe you will have to upgrade it to Hoary in April
... so if you can wait for 2 more months, then go for Ubuntu Hoary.

Hope my inputs helped!

Ciao,
Prem
