Most laptops come with a modem built in (Thinkpad T42, T42p, Dell 8100 from
personal experience)

My vote is for Thinkpads - I have a T42p - rock solid. Works more or less
out of the box with Linux - and some features that don't work right out of the
box are easily fixable.

Dells are nice (generally cheaper) but their build quality is tacky and they are
bricks.
