I don't have answers, but do have very similar questions.
To add to Arindam's list: what about

Acer?
Sony?
Toshiba?
Compaq?
HP Pavilion?

0. Which of these are easily available in Kolkata?

1. Processor: Is there much variability between brands on this
count? What's a good laptop processor?

2. Display: does Linux work smoothly with something like the
wide-screen Compaqs?

3. Weight: if you're traveling a lot, it's probably important
for the laptop to be light-weight.

4. Robustness (will it take some knocking about?), reliability,
service, etc.?

Also, I assume one can request one's own configuration regarding
amount of RAM, whether it has a DVD writer, etc.?

Should one worry about the Lenovo vs. IBM deal?

Mandar.
